Your Step-by-Step Guide to Floating at Kairos Float & Wellness Studio
You’ve heard about float therapy. Maybe your friend raved about how relaxed they felt, or you saw a post about athletes using it to recover faster. But if you’ve never floated before, you’re probably wondering: “What actually happens when I book a float session?”
At Kairos Float & Wellness Studio in Greenville, NC, we’re here to demystify the experience—and help you feel completely at ease before you even step into your suite.
Whether you're visiting for pain relief, muscle recovery, anxiety reduction, or deep mental reset, here’s what to expect from start to float to finish.
🛑 First Things First: What Is Float Therapy?
Float therapy, or sensory deprivation therapy, involves resting in a private float suite filled with 10 inches of warm water saturated with over 1,500 pounds of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). The salt makes you effortlessly buoyant, and the environment—free from light, sound, and external stimulation—promotes deep relaxation and healing.
Step-by-Step: Your Float Experience at Kairos
Step 1: Check In + Orientation
When you arrive at Kairos Float & Wellness Studio, you’ll be warmly welcomed by our team. First-time guests receive a brief orientation that explains the session, the benefits of floating, and how to use your private float suite. Don’t worry—every question is welcome! Do NOT float if you have recently dyed your hair!
💡 Nervous? That’s totally normal. Most first-time floaters leave saying, “I wish I’d done this sooner.”
Step 2: Shower + Prep
Before entering the float tank, you’ll shower in your private suite to remove oils, lotions, and makeup. This helps keep the float water pristine and enhances magnesium absorption.
You’ll be provided with:
Shampoo, Bodywash, and Conditioner
Earplugs
A towel, washcloth, make-up washcloth, and robe
Vaseline (to cover small cuts or abrasions)
A hair tie for long hair
Q-Tips
👙 What to wear? Most people float nude for the full sensory experience—it’s your private space, so wear whatever feels comfortable.

Step 3: Step Into Stillness
Now the magic (science) begins.
You’ll enter your state-of-the-art float suite, where water is heated to match skin temperature. Once you lie back, you’ll float effortlessly, weightlessly, silently. The Epsom salt supports your body, relieving pressure from joints and muscles while calming your nervous system.
For the next 60 or 90 minutes:
Your spine decompresses
Your muscles relax
Your mind quiets
Your body absorbs magnesium, easing pain and inflammation
You control the lights and music from inside the float suite.
Step 4: Gently Return to Reality
At the end of your session, soft music and lights guide you out of your float. You’ll shower again to rinse off the salt and get dressed. Use the blow-dryers and test out some of our products in the post-float hair & make-up area.
Feel free to relax in our post-float lounge for tea, water, and a few extra minutes of Zen before heading back into your day.
🧠 What You'll Likely Feel Afterwards
Most floaters report:
Immediate relief from muscle soreness and joint tension
A sense of mental calm and clarity
Better sleep that same night
Reduced anxiety and stress
For athletes and high performers, consistent floating also helps reduce recovery time and improve focus.
