The Scientist Behind the Tank: John C. Lilly and the Origins of Float Therapy

When people step into one of our float tanks at Kairos, most are thinking about stress relief, sore muscles, or an hour of quiet. Few realize they're using a piece of equipment that traces directly back to a neuroscientist's laboratory at the National Institutes of Health. Float therapy didn't emerge from the wellness industry — the wellness industry grew up around it. Understanding where the float tank came from helps explain why we built Kairos the way we did: as a science-first studio, not a spa with a gimmick.
A Neuroscientist, Not a Wellness Entrepreneur
John Cunningham Lilly (1915–2001) trained as a physician and neuroscientist, with degrees in physics and biology from Caltech and a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. During World War II, he researched the physiological effects of high-altitude flight and developed instruments for measuring gas pressure in pilots. After the war, he moved into brain research at the National Institute of Mental Health, where he was among the first scientists to map pain and pleasure pathways in the brain and to develop safer methods for implanting electrodes for neural stimulation research.
This is the context that matters: the float tank wasn't invented by someone looking to start a business. It was built by a working neuroscientist trying to answer a specific research question.

The Question That Started It All for Float Therapy
In the early 1950s, the prevailing theory in neuroscience held that the brain needed constant external stimulation to stay conscious — that without a steady stream of sensory input, the mind would simply shut down. Lilly wanted to test that theory directly. In 1954, using tank equipment borrowed from a colleague's swimmer-metabolism research, he built an apparatus to reduce external stimulation as close to zero as physically possible: a body-temperature saltwater tank, complete darkness, and near-total silence.
Lilly and a research partner served as their own first subjects, submerging themselves for hours at a time. The result contradicted the prevailing theory. Rather than losing consciousness or becoming distressed, they found the experience deeply relaxing and, in Lilly's words, unexpectedly restorative. This technique became known as Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy, or REST — the formal, clinical term that still appears in the scientific literature today.
From Underwater Mask to the Modern Float Pod
The earliest version of Lilly's tank looked nothing like what you'll find at a float studio today. Subjects were suspended upright, fully submerged except for the head, and wore a breathing mask to stay underwater safely. It was functional for research purposes, but not exactly comfortable.
Over the following decade, Lilly refined the design considerably. By the late 1960s, he had reformulated the tank around a high concentration of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate), which increases water density enough that a person floats supine at the surface without any equipment holding them up. That single change — removing the mask, the harness, and the need to fight buoyancy — is what transformed the isolation tank from a piece of lab equipment into something a person could reasonably relax in. Water heaters, filtration, and air circulation systems followed, laying the practical groundwork for the tanks used in float studios today, including the two Epsom-salt tanks we run here at Kairos.
Science First, Culture Second
It's worth being clear-eyed about Lilly's full career. In the 1960s and 70s, his research expanded into dolphin cognition, communication research, and — more controversially — self-experimentation with psychedelics inside the tank, which drew him into the counterculture movement alongside figures like Timothy Leary and Ram Dass. That period is part of the historical record and worth knowing, but it's also distinct from what made the tank itself work. The physiological mechanism Lilly documented — a sharp reduction in external sensory input — doesn't depend on any of that later chapter of his life.
That distinction matters for how we think about float therapy today. The tank's effect on the body isn't a matter of belief or lifestyle; it's a testable physiological response, and it's been tested extensively since Lilly's original work.
What the Research Says Now
Modern flotation-REST research has grown well beyond Lilly's original case-study approach. A 2025 systematic review covering 63 studies and roughly 1,800 participants — spanning pain management, athletic performance, stress, mental well-being, and clinical anxiety — found consistent evidence of benefit in several of these areas, while noting the evidence for sleep disorders specifically remains more limited. An earlier meta-analysis of 27 studies (449 participants) found reductions in cortisol and blood pressure following float sessions, both consistent with a shift toward parasympathetic ("rest and digest") nervous system activity. Randomized trials, including work out of the Laureate Institute for Brain Research, are now examining floatation-REST as a structured intervention for clinical anxiety and depression.
None of this means float therapy is a cure-all — the research base, while growing, still has real limits, and reputable studios should say so plainly rather than overstate what the data supports. But it does mean the practice has an unusually well-documented lineage: a testable hypothesis, a physician-scientist willing to serve as his own first subject, and seven decades of follow-up research examining whether the original observation holds up. It largely has.
Why This History Matters at Kairos
We built Kairos around the idea that Eastern North Carolina deserves a wellness studio grounded in the same rigor you'd expect from a physiology lab — because, historically, that's exactly where this modality came from. When you float here, you're not trying a wellness trend with murky origins. You're using a refined version of an apparatus a neuroscientist built to test a real question about the brain, backed by a research literature that's still actively being written.
That's the throughline from Lilly's borrowed tank at the NIH in 1954 to the tanks at our studio one mile east of ECU: the science came first, and the wellness industry followed.
